Sea conditions in October
Thailand has two coastlines on opposite monsoon calendars. Here's what each looks like this month for swimming, diving, and boat trips.
Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi
Improving fast through the month. First two weeks still rough; last two weeks visibility climbs to 15–20m and operators reopen. Late October is a sweet spot.
Gulf coast — Samui, Phangan, Tao
Deteriorating. The Gulf monsoon arrives — heavier rain by month-end, choppy seas, ferries occasionally cancelled.
How crowded is Thailand in October?
Low season is ending but high season hasn't started. Hotel rates still well below peak through mid-October, climbing through the second half. Book Andaman accommodation for late October two weeks ahead — supply tightens fast.
What to pack for Thailand in October
- Compact rain jacket — still needed daily for the first half
- Light layers — temperatures start dropping in the north
- Quick-dry clothes
- Waterproof shoes for early-month travel
- Insect repellent
October is a transition month. Pack for wet conditions if visiting in the first two weeks; pack for the cool-dry season if visiting in the last week. The middle is unpredictable.
Thailand in October — common questions
Is October a good time to visit Thailand?
October is the gamble month. The first two weeks are still wet on the Andaman coast and in Bangkok; the last two weeks often feel like winter is back. Late October is a sweet spot — Andaman recovering, north cooling, no high-season crowds yet. Earlier in the month, expect rain everywhere.
Is October rainy season in Thailand?
Yes, for most of the country, but it's transitional. The Andaman and central regions are easing out of the southwest monsoon — rain drops sharply through the month. The Gulf coast flips into its wet season starting in October, with peak rainfall in November–December.
How much rain does Bangkok get in October?
Bangkok sees around 240mm of rain across 19 days in October, but it's heavily front-loaded — the first half of the month is wet, the second half dries out quickly. By Halloween, the city is usually clear and cool.
Is October a good time for Phuket?
It depends on when in October. The first two weeks are still wet — dive operators reopening but not yet at peak. The last two weeks are excellent — sea visibility climbing to 20m+, calm conditions, prices not yet at high-season peak. Late October is one of the best windows of the year if you can time it.
Should I avoid Koh Samui in October?
Probably yes, especially in the second half of the month. The Gulf coast flips into its wet season starting in October — rain picks up sharply through the month and peaks in November. If you want guaranteed sunshine on a beach this month, choose Phuket or Krabi (late October) instead.
