Thailand in August: Weather, What to Expect & Where to Go

August is mid-monsoon almost everywhere except the Gulf — and yet it's one of the busiest months because of European school holidays. Expect rain, but also high prices on the Andaman despite the weather.

Sea conditions in August

Thailand has two coastlines on opposite monsoon calendars. Here's what each looks like this month for swimming, diving, and boat trips.

Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi

Wet and rough. Visibility 5–10m, most dive operators closed, beaches have strong rip currents. Ferries run when weather allows.

Gulf coast — Samui, Phangan, Tao

At peak. Sea temperature 30°C, Koh Tao visibility 25–30m, ferries on schedule, diving live-aboards running.

How crowded is Thailand in August?

High season

European school holidays push prices up on Phuket and Krabi despite the monsoon — worst value of the year. Samui sees a noticeable bump in tourists too. Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Isaan remain quiet.

What to pack for Thailand in August

  • Compact rain jacket — used daily
  • Quick-dry travel clothes only
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals you don't mind soaking
  • Insect repellent — peak mosquito month
  • Dry bag for phone and wallet

August is the peak of the wet season in Bangkok and on the Andaman side. Don't fight it — plan museums, cooking classes, malls, and cafés for the afternoons; outdoor sightseeing for mornings.

Thailand in August — common questions

Is August a good time to visit Thailand?

Only if you're flexible. The Andaman coast is wet and overpriced (European school holidays inflate prices despite the monsoon), Bangkok is rainy, but the Gulf islands and the north are perfectly workable. Skip Phuket/Krabi, head to the Gulf or the north, and accept that big-city sightseeing will involve rain.

Is August rainy season in Thailand?

Yes — August is one of the wettest months of the year on the Andaman side (360mm in Phuket) and in Bangkok (190mm). The north sees its peak monthly rainfall too. Only the Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Tao) stays mostly dry.

Why is Phuket so expensive in August despite the rain?

European school holidays. Many European families travel in August regardless of weather, which keeps Phuket and Krabi hotels at peak-adjacent rates even though it's the worst beach month of the year. It's genuinely the worst value-for-money window on the Thai calendar.

How hot is Bangkok in August?

Bangkok averages 29°C with afternoon highs of 33°C and overnight lows of 26°C. Humidity stays at 80% throughout the day, with daily afternoon storms breaking the heat. Flash flooding in low-lying neighbourhoods is common after heavy storms.

Is the Gulf coast a good idea in August?

Yes — August is the tail end of Koh Samui's peak dry season. Expect reliable sun, sea temperatures of 30°C, and exceptional diving on Koh Tao with 25–30m visibility. It's the country's most reliable August beach destination.
